A new character has joined our farm crew! Patch (the pup formerly known as Buckley) is only five or six months old but he’s a very clever little fellow. In just one day, he’s already managed to scale the eight-step ladder up to Zoe’s cubby, been for a ride in the Bobcat and learnt (or remembered) to heel on a leash.
With Kelpie blood flowing through his veins, Patch loves to run. We expected that. What took us by surprise was this pup’s sense of calm. He nodded off less than five minutes after hopping in our car for the first time and seems completely unfazed by Zoe’s antics.
It’s a new start for Patch, who was left at a pound just a few weeks old and rescued by the volunteer foster carers from Homeless Hounds.
Surfing the net at http://www.petrescue.com.au can be an emotional experience. There’s Sascha, the reluctantly surrendered tradies’ dog who can bark Happy Birthday, the pair of dogs who minded their owner’s body for three days until he was found and dozens more that I would love to bring home. I really can see how people end up with mobs of rescued dogs.

Maybe Patch should have been called Anubis, with those ears – http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/7/7b/Anubis_standing.jpg/220px-Anubis_standing.jpg
Hopefully he’ll grow into them! Don’t want an undertaker dog!
What a joy to see! Please keep updating us on Patch’s progress. Thank you for adopting him.
ps. I think this is a typo. “It’s a new start for Patch, who was left at a pound just a few weeks old by the volunteer foster carers from Homeless Hounds.”
We actually rescued him from the pound. LOL
Patches foster carer.
Oh dear! Sorry Gaye!
What an absolute cutie! If I could figure out how to do it I would upload a pic of our (rescue) Kelpie Jersey- we found her tied up out the front of a shop with free to any home and was off to the pound that night. She was about 6 months old and too bolshy for the farmers kids who had her- also claimed she was untrainable! She was just a typical pup really, and honest to God she is the best dog we have ever had. She is just unflappable and loves everyone (a testament to her breed I’d say!). But. The ears. Anubis is right alright. She’s now 18 months old and we can pick up channel 31 on them when the wind direction is right! She never did grow into them. But her head got wider.. so that helps.. in the same way that wearing black makes you appear slimmer! In fact I can see her asleep on our bed in the other room under a pile of blankets with one ear sticking up right now. It is however quite endearing. Hope Patch grows into his ears a little better than Jersey did, or they just become a great source of affection for him!
Thanks Jet! Good on you for taking Jersey under your wing!
Patch’s ears do seem to have shrunk recently but they’re still a pretty spectacular pair. I think kelpie ears come down to size when they start to fold over at the tips. Maybe our young’uns will get there in time!
